This song always gets me in the gut, and I’m not really sure why. I think it’s a good example of heavy irony being used in a way that amps up earnest emotion. It’s phony optimism that somehow, despite everything, goes full circle to earnest sentiment. The cynicism somehow gets purified by the schmaltz.
